We’re playing fests! We’re playing on a boat! We’re playing a country we ain’t never been to before! Mark your calendars Europe…cause I’m coming East!* And I’m bringing Bleubird with me!
As Bleubird awaits the ripple effects of his Fake Four debut Cannonball!!!, set to drop next Tuesday, folk rap O.G.Ceschi lends an assist to the inspirational lyricism and melody of “Time 4real.” The new record, which was produced by labelmate Astronautalis and Radical Face, finds Bleubird at the most focused and well-rounded stage of his career. A road warrior at his core, Bleubird’s work reflects an anchor-free philosophy and succinctly captures moments in time across vast terrains. Those in Europe can catch the nomadic emcee live for the next six weeks alongside Astronautalis.
Bleubird’s newest, Cannonball!, does not disappoint. I’d consider this album well worth the wait. In fact, I may have a little bebe bonheur for this album (whaaat).
In his usual style, Birdy delivers the perfect balance of aggression, whimsy, and whiskey, stuffed into a blender and whipped into a mad hip-hop frenzy. (On the other hand, this album also relents for a two-minute interlude entitled “Christian Wife” at track six, which makes you feel like you’re kicking back in his living room and listening to him and Lynne Piper goof around on some old-school country music.)
On the other end of the spectrum from “Christian Wife” is “Black Sandcastles,” in which he brings back the rapid-fire, syncopated verbal acrobatics we’re used to from past works like RIPUSA. Overall, this album is far more laid back than RIP, but it feels more polished as well. While I always appreciated Birdy’s breathless rap-rants, Cannonball will probably be easier on my blood pressure, and new listeners may find it more approachable.
Astronautalis also contributes, with a producing credit on this album. Their long friendship shines through the play of Astro’s beats with Birdy’s words. His ocean-side melodics lend that previously mentioned relaxed vibe, and push Birdy into new territory musically, and I think it’s working great.
All in all, it’s a tight competition for favorite song for me, between “Pimp Hand,” “Time 4real,” and “Black Sandcastles,” but since this album is so tight overall, I’ll have to give it a few listens before a final verdict. Oh poor me.
(That being said, I don’t know if “Switchblades” will ever get booted from #1 Bleubird opus in my mind. It still gets me every damn time.)
Great job, Boyfriends Inc, and congratulations to Bleubird.
during the last year of production on “This Is Our Science”, i would find breaks from my own voice and neurosis by working with one of my best friends in the world (and my better half of Boyfriends INC), Bleubird on his new record “CANNONBALL!!!”. I have toured with bird, made music with bird, and always been a fan of bird’s work…but i always felt like he needed to be pushed a little out of his comfort zone and taught a couple of new tricks, much the same way Radical Face taught me years ago when we made “The Mighty Ocean & Nine Dark Theaters”.
Bird and I talked a long time about finding a direction for this record, and as much as we wanted to blaze new trails, we wanted to leave a bread crumb trail back to his South Florida roots. What came out of this, with the additional production and mixing guidance of Radical Face, is an amalgam of Bleubird pouring out melodic sincerity, and staccato chops over a musical mixture of lush organic instruments and hard as fuck miami bass 808s.
I am really proud of the result of this record, but more than anything, i am proud of bird. When we started this journey, he was timid with melody, tip toeing around choruses, and by the end…the helm was his…and he should be proud of the work he did.

Isaiah is one of the most interesting people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. When Astronautalis introduced us nearly 7 years ago I was instantly aware that I had ever met anyone like him. Both intelligent and menacing, he maintains an air of respect that makes you mind your posture and watch your manners. His presence is commanding, and his music speaks volumes of truth. He’s the type of friend that would stand up for you in the face of trouble, and punch YOU in the face if you were out of line. When I think Tucson, I think Isaiah. As far as I’m concerned…he’s the mayor.
